It’s been said that hairdressers are like therapists. For those of us who’ve tirelessly worked behind the chair doing hair while clients unload about their day, latest love or heartbreak, greatest achievement or recent failure, we know – to a very large degree – it’s true.
As hairdressers, it’s clear that we are more than beauty professionals. Beyond our services, we provide a safe, nonjudgmental space for our clients to share their thoughts and feelings. They see us as a confidant, a listener, and a valued therapist. In return, we become a sounding board, offer advice when asked, and provide much-needed emotional support, even when they don’t realize how much they need it. It’s a role that we may never have anticipated taking on, but it’s become an essential part of our jobs.
However, who’s taking care of us? While we give so much of ourselves emotionally, it’s crucial for us to take care of our own well-being. Finding work-life balance, making time for self-care, and prioritizing our mental health are all essential for us to continue providing invaluable support to our clients.
Here are some ways to care for the caretaker in all of us:
Find Balance
As we embrace our role as emotional supporters, it’s vital to remember that our well-being matters just as much. We need to emphasize balance; taking care of our emotional health isn’t a weakness but a recognition of the demanding work we do. Learning to set boundaries and knowing when to step back emotionally are vital skills that can keep our careers sustainable in the long run.
Seek Support
Finding support is crucial for us. Engaging with professional networks and communities can be a fantastic way to share our experiences and discuss the unique challenges we face. These groups allow us to connect with peers who truly understand what we go through.
We should also not hesitate to seek therapy when we need it. Talking to a licensed professional can give us a safe outlet for our emotions and guidance on managing the stresses of our profession effectively.
Let’s not forget about our connections with friends and family outside the salon. They can offer a calming perspective and the care we need to unwind after a long day.
Mentorship is another valuable resource. Building relationships with seasoned hairdressers can provide us with guidance, while mentoring newcomers allows us to exchange fresh ideas, creating a nurturing environment for all.
Prioritize Self Care
It’s also essential to prioritize our self-care routines. Whether we enjoy a long bath, go for a walk, practice yoga, or dive into hobbies that spark joy, we all need these moments to recharge and restore our balance. Instead of finding time to work out, meditate, or plan a trip, make the time. Schedule your “me time” into your day, plan trips or events that you can look forward to, and make your much-deserved self-care a healthy habit.
Build a Culture of Support
We must strive to create a culture within our industry that encourages us to seek help when needed. Just as we listen to our clients, it’s time we make space for each other’s voices. Recognizing our challenges, celebrating our successes, and ensuring we have the support we need is essential.
We play a vital role in making our clients feel good about themselves, but we deserve care, too. Let’s ensure that we receive the same support we provide, creating a safe space for us to express our feelings and seek help. Remember, a well-cared-for hairdresser can give the best care to their clients, making this a win-win for everyone involved. Let’s take care of each other because we truly need it.
So, the next time a client is in our chair pouring their heart out, let’s remember the importance of also caring for ourselves. We are the unsung heroes providing not just great hairstyles but also compassion and understanding. As much as we are there for our clients, it’s equally important to be there for ourselves and each other.
